Weekly classes include the practice of asana (physical postures), breathing exercises and meditation techniques. In class we explore the science of yoga through our practice; allowing us to strengthen our body and bring 'stillness' to the mind.
I teach in the tradition of Hatha Yoga, incorporating some techniques of Iyengar Yoga. The classes are designed to incorporate breath work, a flow/vinyasa segment and then static postures are introduced whereby they are held for a period of between 30 seconds to 1 minute.
The effects of yoga take place through practice, practice and more practice. It is recommended that each person works on their practice in their own space, and then attend classes regularly so that I am able to assist them in growing and expanding that practice.
"In yoga, the purpose is to bring some change and the teacher is the reference point ...We need somebody who can hold a mirror in front of us. Otherwise we very quickly begin to imagine that we are perfect and know it all. The relationship between the student and teacher must be based on trust" (Desikachar, TKV, 1995. The Heart of Yoga).
To begin with I ask all new students to complete a health screen questionnaire, detailing any injuries or medical conditions. This gives me an indication of what is going on inside the body and I keep that information in mind as I teach the class. Through verbal instructions I aim to support each student so that they may take their body to a place of healing.
Specific alignment cues are provided throughout the class in order for each student to tailor the practice to fit their needs, injuries or medical conditions.
Progress in the practice of yoga means different things to different people. As such, students are encouraged to work within their own limits, and towards their individual aims. My aim is to support the student in undertaking an intelligent approach to yoga.
Group classes are suitable for beginners and intermediate students.
